The Snowman A Harry Hole Thriller Book 7 (Audible Audio Edition) Jo Nesbo Sean Barrett Random House AudioBooks Books
Harry Hole is a mystery novel trope: the hardened, introverted, alcoholic detective who's also incredibly gifted at what he does. The trope doesn't seem tired at all in The Snowman, though. He's funny, very likeable and a genius, but human. He keeps getting close to the killer, but never close enough, until, of course, the end. The story begins with a scene from the serial killer's past, that doesn't make complete sense until near the end when the key details come to light. The point of view from which this exciting story is told shifts often, but isn't hard to follow, even though the plot and the characters' relationships to each other are complicated. The multiple points of view give the reader a front row seat to all the action. Duck, or you'll get sprayed with arterial blood spatter. Yes, there's some pretty graphic violence, sex, philosophy about life, and outrageous action scenes that go on for pages. At one point, I actually said, "Well played," aloud, because I was completely duped by a plot twist. I couldn't read these action scenes fast enough. I loved the philosophical comparisons between animal and human behavior. This is the sixth book in the series, but I haven't read any of the others, and there's no need to. This gem stands alone, on its own two brilliant and original feet just fine.Product details

The Snowman A Harry Hole Thriller Book 7 (Audible Audio Edition) Jo Nesbo Sean Barrett Random House AudioBooks Books Reviews
Jo Nesbo writes great crime fiction. This book is part of a series of novels that revolves around police detective Harry Hole (pronounced Wooly). Working on violent crimes in Oslo (mainly, but not exclusively, serial killers), Hole is sort of a Norwegian "Dirty Harry Callahan". You know, the rebel that refuses to do what he is ordered to do and instead, does what he thinks is "right". Oh, he is also an alcoholic. Although the series template is cliche, Nesbo' s writing skills make all the Hole stories anything but the "same old" cop yarns. If you enjoy the work of Lawrence Block, Martin Cruz Smith, or Phillip Kerr, I think you will like the Hole crime series. It is probably best , but not required, to read the "Harry Hole" books in order. References to past stories characters and cases are made in "The Snowman" but this book can stand alone and is, in my opinion, one of the creepiest and best in the series.
I think I may have fallen into a Jo Nesbø hole.
With a protagonist named (non-ironically) Harry Hole.
Unfortunately, I've had s***acular luck with romance reads lately so I picked this up not realizing it was book 7 of a series. Oops. And now I can't unring this bell.
There are a couple references made to past events but they were minor and didn't detract from how engrossing this case was.
The Snowman is a serial killer targeting women. Their hallmark is leaving a snowman near the crime scene. Spooky. As. Fark.
The case is full of twists and turns that felt authentic when trying to solve a serial killer case. Some may see them as red herrings but most of them are pretty obvious to the reader, so I never found them frustrating.
I really liked the way Nesbø constructed this narrative with Americana references, the way he folded in song lyrics and most especially Harry's characterization as a flawed individual who is well aware of his flaws but helpless to alter them. Both his relationship with Rakel and Oleg to a lesser extent I found moving. There are multiple POVs and one of those is the killer's and all of them had a distinct voice.
Needless to say, I'll be reading more from this series. I'm SUPER tempted to read the next one to figure out what the deal is with that random dangler but I want to know of Harry's beginnings. Decisions are hard.
Recommended to suspense thriller fans.
This is a brilliantly written book. Not only is the setting perfect for the plot but the characters are ones you want to root for. I have seen the film and was slightly disappointed. Not nearly enough woodland suspense scenes which is to be expected in the novel. Intense relationships which aren't hard to follow but do add that extra layer some readers may enjoy rather than purely police procedural. Although Harry Hole is a rather cliched example of a cop you hope will improve as the series progresses, the plot for this novel is far from that. A serial killer targeting victims by leaving behind a snowman at the scene. I did wonder how realistic this was, how much time the killer would have to roll a few balls of hard packed snow without being seen. But it was too good to put down with its multiple points of view that give a bird's eye view into the lives of all those closest to the case. Plenty of philosophical moments to chew over, not too many so a reader gets bogged down in it. Action scenes have a breathless pace of their own and plot twists in abundance. This is the 7th book in the series but stands very well on its own two feet. If you enjoy Camilla Lackberg and Lisa Marklund, you'll enjoy the Scandinavian winters that abound in Nesbo's books as well.
highly recommend the book. Much better than the film.
